Whether you're a local, spending Christmas in Cornwall or simply looking for a festive evening out, Lostwithiel's Dickensian Evening is well worth putting in your diary.

What Happens at Dickensian Evening?

Imagine wandering through the streets of a historic Cornish town, surrounded by Christmas lights, music and people dressed in Victorian clothing.

That's the charm of Lostwithiel's Dickensian Evening.

The town's independent shops traditionally stay open late, while local traders, craftspeople and food stalls help transform the streets into a festive shopping experience.

There's plenty to see and enjoy, including:

  • Victorian costumes: Many shopkeepers, performers and visitors embrace the Dickensian theme. You're welcome to dress up too!
  • Live music and carols: Choirs, bands and street entertainers add to the festive atmosphere.
  • Christmas shopping: Discover independent shops, handmade gifts and stalls selling all sorts of interesting treasures.
  • Food and drink: Enjoy seasonal treats and refreshments from businesses and food traders around town.
  • Family entertainment: Previous events have featured Santa's grotto and traditional entertainment for younger visitors.

One of the nicest things about Dickensian Evening is simply wandering through the town, soaking up the atmosphere and discovering what's happening around the next corner.

The final entertainment programme for 2026 may change, so check the official Lostwithiel event information before travelling.

Discover Lostwithiel's Independent Shops

Lostwithiel is known for its independent businesses, charming streets and welcoming atmosphere.

Dickensian Evening is a particularly lovely opportunity to explore the town's shops after dark, find unusual Christmas presents and support local businesses.

Rather than rushing around a busy shopping centre, you can browse at your own pace, enjoy the festive decorations and perhaps discover a shop you didn't know existed.

And with so many historic buildings around the town, Lostwithiel makes a wonderful setting for a traditional Christmas celebration.

A New Chapter at the Old Duchy Palace

We're especially excited about Dickensian Evening this year because we'll be preparing to open The Lost Bookshop & Tea Rooms, inside the historic Old Duchy Palace on Quay Street.

We're hoping to have the bookshop ready to welcome visitors during Dickensian Evening, giving people the opportunity to step inside this remarkable building, explore our shelves and perhaps find a Christmas gift or two.

Our plans are still coming together, so we'll confirm our participation nearer the time.

Please note that our tea rooms will not be serving food or drinks during Dickensian Evening. We're saving that for our official opening, when we can give everything the time and attention it deserves.

Instead, we're looking forward to meeting visitors, introducing ourselves and sharing a little more about what's coming to the Old Duchy Palace.

If you spot us at the entrance, do come and say hello!

You can discover more about our bookshop or explore the history of the Old Duchy Palace before your visit.

Getting to Lostwithiel Dickensian Evening

Arriving by Train

If you're travelling from elsewhere in Cornwall, we'd particularly recommend considering the train.

Lostwithiel has its own railway station, just a short walk from the town centre. It's a convenient way to visit, especially on busy event evenings when parking can be difficult.

Check train times and evening return services before setting off.

Arriving by Car

Parking in Lostwithiel can be a challenge on an ordinary day, and Dickensian Evening is one of the busiest events in the town's calendar!

If you're planning to drive, please allow plenty of extra time to find a space, be patient and park responsibly, keeping roads, driveways and access routes clear.

As mentioned above, travelling by train can be one of the best options for visitors coming from outside Lostwithiel, particularly on such a busy evening.

A Few Tips for Enjoying the Evening

December evenings in Cornwall can be chilly, and sometimes a little damp, so wrap up warmly and wear comfortable shoes.

Allow plenty of time to explore. Some of the best moments come from simply wandering through the streets, listening to the music and enjoying the Christmas atmosphere.

If you're visiting with children, the early evening is a lovely time to experience the decorations and entertainment.

And don't forget to support some of Lostwithiel's wonderful independent shops while you're here. Events like this are a brilliant reminder of what makes small Cornish towns so special.

We Hope to See You There!

We're looking forward to experiencing Dickensian Evening as part of our new adventure in Lostwithiel.

For us, it's a chance to meet our new neighbours, welcome visitors to the Old Duchy Palace and celebrate everything that makes this little town such a special place.

Whether you're coming for the music, the Christmas shopping, the atmosphere or simply an excuse to dress like you've stepped out of a Charles Dickens novel, we hope you have a wonderful evening.

Lostwithiel Dickensian Evening takes place on Thursday 10 December 2026, starting at 6pm.
